LWRA Ham Bytes – Week of 5/26/25

Good morning, this may be the one time I take opportunity to write about something not necessarily HAM radio.

Today is a very important day, Memorial Day, a day we should STOP and recognize the sacrifice that Americans have literally STOPPED their lives to protect your freedoms and rights. I believe you have the right to your opinion, thoughts and even protest, even if we disagree! That’s the ultimate benefit for those sacrifices. Thank each to those who died and suffered for those freedoms.

I know some of your work, live farther away that Lake Wales than others. Wednesday the 28th of May something will occur in our town that is sad but should be honoring with all that we as a people can muster. A US Army soldier was listed MIA in 1950, That is 1950 as in 74 years ago. This young man, 21 years old, went to war to protect you and me along with our rights. He has been missing all those years, never had a family of his own, never became known to a community, never saw his parents encourage his to do whatever he chooses to do in life, never had the opportunity to live life, rather he was either captured and died or killed. His remains have been repatriated after 74 years back to his hometown. I can say I have been very disappointed in the overall response to honor his procession to burial. I know I have been involved in a couple repatriation processions including Jim Stewart’s father, a ham and current president of the Lakeland Club. If you can please join me on Wednesday at 11 on US 27 just south of SR60 to stand in honor of this 21-year-old US Soldier who gave it ALL. I plan on standing in honor as they enter the gates of the cemetery. If you would care to join me, please do.

Thanks for letting me rant, I promise ill be back to my regular Monday letter next week.

We may do something for a couple of hams on another weekend other than QRP, so look for the messages if you want to help. Not an all-day thing just a couple of hours.

Our up coming this Saturday! QRP will be at Lake Shipp Park with the topical focus on POTA (Parks on The Air) a great venue in the hobby for HF, using many modes like FT8, FT4, Phone and CW. A lot of fun. Our focus will be to let you see how to HUNT, we cannot activate that park due to rules. What you need to listen for and what you need to say. We will also show you how to see ‘spot’ listings on the POTA site and much much more. If you want to set up, you station for HF for regular radio play… please come join us. May 31st at Lake Shipp Park in Winter Haven. www.lwra.us/qrp
