Sam was originally from the state of Indiana, and his family relocated to Florida in the late 1950’s to early 1960’s. Sam got started in amateur radio and was originally licensed, while he was still in Indiana. Upon relocating to Florida, Sam obtained the callsign W4KUM, which he had held until his death. in 1974, Sam founded the Lake Wales Repeater Association to support the 147.330 MHz repeater which he helped to setup in Lake Wales. The Lake Wales Repeater Association eventually became the Lake Wales Radio Amateurs. Sam served numerous terms as LWRA President and then as LWRA Secretary. Sam served for a number of years as repeater trustee until 2005.
Sam was an avid HF digital communications operator, enjoying the operation of various HF digital modes. Sam was an amateur radio mentor to our club Vice President Christine Duez K4KJN, and our club Webmaster Darrell Davis KT4WX.
